Passing the Test

ApproveTesting – the very sound of that word is discomforting to most believers. Did you know that how you respond to testing, tells a lot about your walk with God? It’s a part of the Lord’s growth plan for our lives. We should be cultivating a positive attitude toward His guidance in this area.

Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Feast was near. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
John 6:3-6

When God tests us, it’s for our benefit. If there’s anything we know about testing; it’s both necessary and unavoidable. Even with this knowledge, it’s still not something we look forward to. One thing we need to realize is that testing is God’s way of reinforcing to us that we’ve learned a lesson of faith.

In the above verse, we see that it was Philip’s turn to experience this kind of test. The Lord asked Philip where the provision was to come from to feed a huge crowd of people. It’s interesting to note that Jesus already knew what He was going to do.

When God tests us, He already knows the outcome. We don’t like to admit it, but we have a very limited knowledge of things. Because of this, we need to firmly rely on God. He already knows the plan. We need to go before Him and seek His mind in the situations we find ourselves in.

This should be very encouraging to us. God is never taken by surprise. He doesn’t have to come up with a solution to our problem ‘on the fly.’ I just need to be in a position where I’m listening for His voice to take me through victoriously.

We must go to God for the plan to pass the test. Instead of always trying desperately to figure out what to do, we need to admit that we don’t know what needs to be done. Then we’re in the best position to let God guide us in the right path. Instead of going off on our own, we should seek to find out from God what it is that He has already decided to do.

Spend some time today seeking God’s wisdom and guidance for the tests ahead. Let Him reveal to you the only plan for your life that will bring about miraculous results. Yield yourself to that which God has already decided to do in your life. Then He’ll get the glory for it.

Question: How has God’s wisdom helped through a difficult test?

Guidance for the New Year

20132012 is over.  We’re now in new territory!  What does this new year hold for us?  There is a way to safely navigate the unknown that lies before us.

Society is taking a dim view of the future.  With talk of fiscal cliffs and higher taxes, many are worried.  There are those who fear an increase in violence and unpredictable weather patterns.  Where can we turn to for answers?  The same place the truth has always been…

The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.  You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
Isaiah 58:11

Our God didn’t get stuck in 2012!  He is with us today.  He knows all about the latest technology – before it’s even invented.  He is well able to bring though to a victorious new year.

It’s a blessing to know that God will never leave us nor forsake us. According to this verse,  He’s the Guide that never fails.  He can find water in the driest desert.  He gives strength in the time of trouble.  If we rely on Him, we will be just like a spring whose source never fails.

Many times people look at us and wonder what’s the secret of our strength.  There seems to be nothing special about us.  On the outside we’re as weak and mortal as everyone else.

What they don’t know is that our strength comes from far below the surface – deep within – where we have tapped into the presence of an Almighty God.  This is the secret to the abundant life.  We must learn to remain in the presence of the Lord.

Because of the hand of God upon our lives, we seem to have an ability to move forward in ways that others cannot comprehend.  This only happens when we take a spiritual drink from the springs of living water that come directly from the Lord.  This is the road to victorious living.

Spend time with your Guide today.  Let Him empower you for the year ahead.  Become that “well-watered garden” in His presence.  That is the only way to assure an outcome of fulfillment and joy throughout 2013.

I pray God’s richest blessing upon you in the coming year!

Walking Like Jesus

I John 2:6
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

This is one of the toughest assignments we could ever have been given.  It could take someone his whole life just to get started.  Fear, pride and other things will keep some from accepting the gift of salvation until they are much older.  Personally, I’m glad I accepted Christ at a young age.

In this verse, however, John is not talking about our initial conversion to Christ, but rather our ongoing walk with Him.  There are many aspects of this walk that I have heard people talk about.  Loving one another, sharing the good news, and praying for the sick are just a few.

From what I’ve seen there is a major part of Jesus’ life that most Christians never even hear about, let alone imitate.  I am talking about the many times that Jesus went to a solitary place just to be alone with the Father.  It was during these times that He received the strength and guidance needed to fulfill His public ministry.

So, in my opinion, if Jesus needed this in His life, if He felt He couldn’t complete His call without it, then who am I to think I can get by without these private times in the Lord’s presence.  That is why I put together these devotions.  I want as many believers as are able, to experience this incredible meeting of them and God in that secret place.

Spend time in the Father’s presence today.  Find there what your soul needs to carry on.

The Right Road

There is nothing worse than being lost.  Confusion, fear and depression can take over.  If you are not careful you can end up simply going in circles.

Life is the same way.  There are thousands of conflicting paths that all intersect at our feet each morning.  Without a guide we’re lost.  How can we make sense of it all?  Which path will bring us to the place we want to be?

Psalm 25:4-5
Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

The Holy Spirit wants to lead us though the tangled network of choices that lay before us.  Only He knows the outcome of each path, whether taken or not.  He has the wisdom to bring us victoriously into the destiny God has prepared for each of us personally.

There is no better place to start hearing the voice of the Lord than in a quiet place of prayer each morning.  Here you can be free of the distractions that are constantly begging for your attention.  Use your time in the Lord’s presence to strengthen your relationship with Him.  I know that you will find that it is time well spent, as your path grows clearer before you.

The Guidance of God

Exodus 13:20-22
After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.  By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.  Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

God was everything that Israel needed in the desert.  By day He was a pillar of cloud to shield them from the desert sun.  By night He was a pillar of blazing fire to warm them in the cold night air.  But even more than that – night or day – they could see God clearly and follow the path He was marking out for them.

God will go before us in our lives as well, if we let Him.  Our job is to look for the signs of His guidance.  He wants to make the path clear before us.  Even when we go through dark times – when it seems that we can’t go on, He will make a way for us to come through victoriously.

As drivers, many of us put our complete trust in the GPS receiver on our dashboards.  We will turn any direction it tells us to go.  If only we would follow God’s Word the same way, we would have a life that was truly worth living.

Turn your path over to God today.  Let Him be your daily guide.  Enter into the freedom that comes from knowing that the road ahead has already been mapped out.  Commit yourself to following after the only true Guide of our souls.

The Good Shepherd

Revelation 7:17
“For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water.  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

This is one of the most interesting Scriptures.  The Lamb who is also a Shepherd.  What a great illustration of the Christ who took on our weaknesses.  He is worthy to lead us, since He has walked where we live.

Christ is our perfect Shepherd.  He knows the paths of our lives.  He understands the best route to take.  He knows when our soul needs rest, refreshment, and nourishment.  We must learn to trust Him daily for our every need.  We must trust His plan for our lives if we want fulfillment.

I want my life to count for something.  Only under the guidance of the “Good Shepherd” will that come to pass.

If I follow the Lord’s plan for my life, then He will lead me to the right places along the way.  Yes, sometimes the road will be difficult.  But He also knows the rest stops as well.  He will bring us to places of refreshment and restoration that we need if we are to make it to the end.

I must learn to trust in His plan for my life.  He knows the way a lot better than I do.  Once I can acknowledge that, life gets so much more fulfilling.

Whether you have in the past or not – place your life at Jesus’ feet today.  Let Him work it out to His glory.  Put your expectation in Him to bring you to your destiny.

GPS Navigation

Isaiah 30:21
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

About a year ago, I bought my wife a GPS unit to help her get around.  It is amazing to think that there are satellites circling the earth that can pinpoint your location to within a couple of feet.

She used to always call me when she was lost and needing directions.  Now, by using the unit, she always knows where she is and how to get where she is going to.  She even knows how long it will take to get there.

It is comforting to know that thousands of years before this technology was developed, God was already guiding His people.  The Holy Spirit is more accurate than any GPS unit.  He can keep us on track throughout all the twists and turns of life.

There is one requirement, however.  With a GPS unit, you have to look at it from time to time if it is going to benefit you.  It is the same with the Holy Spirit.  He wants to be your guide.  But if you never spend time with Him, you will never hear the words of direction you need to navigate through life.

Spend some time today with the best guide in existence.  Quiet your heart in the Lord’s presence.  Let His voice become plain to you.  Listen for the guidance you need for the road ahead.  Then rejoice in Him for the Holy Spirit who is always with you.
