Going the Distance

JogI have been posting about Abraham and his experience on the mount of sacrifice.  He is an example to us of how to position ourselves to receive God’s provision in our lives.

In my last post I talked about how he was quick to obey the voice of God.  But sometimes, even when we respond right away, things don’t happen when we think they should.

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
Genesis 22:4

We saw that God had told Abraham to leave home with his son.  He also told Abraham that He would show him the place where he was to sacrifice Isaac.  Abraham obeyed immediately, but that was not the end of it.

It’s now three days later and they’re still traveling through the wilderness.  This had to be the hardest walk Abraham ever took.  Yet he continued on, even knowing that he would lose his son in the end.

I’m sure he kept telling himself to just turn around and go home.

“You must have heard wrong.”

In spite of this constant internal pressure he continued to move forward.  He did this not even knowing where his final destination would be.

This is the second key to being victorious in the face of trials and unlocking the blessing of God.  We must cultivate perseverance.  Sometimes it all comes down to the choice to put one foot in front of the other no matter how hard that is.  We must continue to serve God day after day, even when everything around us looks just the opposite of what we think it should be.

It’s in times like this that we must place our confidence in the Lord.  Drawing strength from Him is the only way to move forward when the going gets tough.  Christ has promised us that He would never abandon us.

The good news is that situations can change.  Just because things don’t look good now doesn’t mean that God is not in control.  He is still on the throne.

The truth is that it’s not always easy to follow God’s leading.  But the end result is always worth the effort.  Don’t let the temporary problems rob you of the blessings that the Lord has for you.

Maybe you’re going through something right now that you don’t understand.  You might not know how the Lord could possibly get you through it.

Take the time to draw upon the Lord’s power for you.  Spend time before Him in humility, acknowledging that without Him you can do nothing.  Place your future in His hands and commit yourself to seeing His plan fulfilled in your life.

Question: How has God proven Himself faithful to you in the past?

The Right Road

There is nothing worse than being lost.  Confusion, fear and depression can take over.  If you are not careful you can end up simply going in circles.

Life is the same way.  There are thousands of conflicting paths that all intersect at our feet each morning.  Without a guide we’re lost.  How can we make sense of it all?  Which path will bring us to the place we want to be?

Psalm 25:4-5
Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

The Holy Spirit wants to lead us though the tangled network of choices that lay before us.  Only He knows the outcome of each path, whether taken or not.  He has the wisdom to bring us victoriously into the destiny God has prepared for each of us personally.

There is no better place to start hearing the voice of the Lord than in a quiet place of prayer each morning.  Here you can be free of the distractions that are constantly begging for your attention.  Use your time in the Lord’s presence to strengthen your relationship with Him.  I know that you will find that it is time well spent, as your path grows clearer before you.

The Guidance of God

Exodus 13:20-22
After leaving Succoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.  By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.  Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

God was everything that Israel needed in the desert.  By day He was a pillar of cloud to shield them from the desert sun.  By night He was a pillar of blazing fire to warm them in the cold night air.  But even more than that – night or day – they could see God clearly and follow the path He was marking out for them.

God will go before us in our lives as well, if we let Him.  Our job is to look for the signs of His guidance.  He wants to make the path clear before us.  Even when we go through dark times – when it seems that we can’t go on, He will make a way for us to come through victoriously.

As drivers, many of us put our complete trust in the GPS receiver on our dashboards.  We will turn any direction it tells us to go.  If only we would follow God’s Word the same way, we would have a life that was truly worth living.

Turn your path over to God today.  Let Him be your daily guide.  Enter into the freedom that comes from knowing that the road ahead has already been mapped out.  Commit yourself to following after the only true Guide of our souls.
